The Winding Stair Bookshop, Dublin

At the northern footprint of Ha’penny Bridge is one of the lesser-known treasures of Dublin town: The Winding Stair Bookshop.

Several floors of used and new books inhabit this thoroughly bohemian little bookshop. It was opened in 1982 by Kevin Connolly, who lived, breathed and loved books in this wonderful little corner of the universe. Beloved by many, the shop was sold in 2005 and a larger chain bookshop purchased both the name and the shop. The good news is that the new owners seem dedicated to preserving its famous character (insofar as a large company can).

Climb up the old wooden staircase to the cafe upstairs where you can sit and enjoy a snack with a view over Ha’penny Bridge and the River Liffey.

For years, book friends have sought out this little Dublin shop for a couple of quiet hours doing what they love the most: finding a new book to read and enjoying it in a quiet, friendly environment. Truly one of the most wonderful bookshops in the world, it’s definitely worth a stop for anyone visiting Dublin who loves the written word.
