Bonfires galore!

Irish Halloween bonfire

Perhaps I spoke too soon – submitted for your consideration is the above: an approprately spooky and festive bunch carousing around a bonfire on all hallows eve – the ancient festival celebrating the end of the celtic year known as samhain.

I had stated in an earlier post that it would seem the new draconian measures taken to discourage illegal bonfires and fireworks had gone a long way to stopping this ancient tradition here in Ireland. I’m kind of pleased to see I was wrong. No less than three very large bonfires with attendant fireworks were blazing away around central Athlone last night. There was no sign of the gardai (whose station is a mere 5 min walk away) and no sign of any real trouble.

Come on the town!
