How do you know which is the right tour? And what if you have never taken a package tour before? Well, here are just a few things to consider when choosing an Ireland tour:

  • Choose a tour company that specializes in Ireland tours. This may sound like a no-brainer, but it bear repeating. If you want to get the most out of Ireland, do not go with a company which focuses their attention on tours to Vietnam. Choose a company with lots of experience in Ireland, with on-the-ground experts who know the country, and with lots of Ireland tours under their belts.
  • Choose a focus for your Ireland tour. If you are an avid golfer at home, or you brew your own beer in your garage, or you are a whiskey connoisseur, look into a tour of Ireland with one of those things as a focus. You could spend your Ireland vacation playing golf at the country’s most famous courses, touring breweries around the country or sampling the best Irish whiskey. And the list of specialty areas for Ireland tours does not end with golf or alcohol, either. If you have a passion, chances are there is a specialty tour that will appeal to you - and you could end up with the most unique memories of Ireland that way, too.
  • Choose a day-trip tour, or take several short tours, instead of one big one. If you really are not the all-inclusive package tour type, there is no reason you cannot leave the planning to someone else just for a day or two. By spending several days in one city, you will have enough time to sign up for a day-long package tour of whatever sights are nearby. It could be a tour of some local castles, a trip to a local brewery, or a boat trip to a nearby island. Whenever you find yourself with an “extra” day in a city, be sure to look into what day-trips or short tours are available.
  • Know what you want - and do not want - to deal with on your trip. While some people dread the idea of the big bus tours, for others they are the perfect way to see lots of Ireland without dealing with confusing train or bus schedules. If negotiating your own transportation or booking each hotel in Ireland takes the fun out of your vacation, then do not bother with it - sign up with a tour that takes care of it for you, then sit back and relax.
  • Know that there are alternatives to the big bus tours! More and more often these days, it is possible to find great little tour companies that not only specialize in Ireland tours but also specialize in letting their customers experience the country in a more hands-on way. This might mean a cycling tour of Ireland or a hiking tour of Ireland, both of which will force you to slow down and really see the places you are passing through. Many small group tours of Ireland will make you feel like you are on an independent trip with friends, not part of a package tour.

Finding the right Ireland tour is primarily a matter of knowing what you want from your trip, and then finding the tour company that is best able to meet your needs. The perfect tour of Ireland is out there waiting for you!

City tours of Dublin

You’ve got several options here and all of them are pretty worthwhile, but the one we heartily recommend is the Viking Splash Tour. If you only have the time and patience for one, this is absolutely the best choice for most people.
