The TriAthlone triathalon

Just look at that. Those are the triathletes this afternoon beginning the first leg of the triAthlone triathalon, swimming against the current up the river Shannon. After that they bike, run and then feel really good about what they’ve done I guess.
Crazy athletic types.
Filmore East rocks Athlone Castle

They might not have been the band listed on the tickets. They might not have been able to start playing as early as advertised, but last night Filmore East, a Moate-based blues/rock band took to the just-erected stage in Athlone Castle and became the first rock band in Athlone history to play in the castle.

Well, there they are - the inflatable pontoons on the Shannon just under Athlone town bridge. Those pontoons mark the swimming lanes for this weekend’s triathlone race. I just got back from a meeting with Bobby Hewitt, the organiser of the Athlone tri-fest - a weekend-long festival that encompasses a triathalon, concerts and loads of other festival madness.
But here’s the cool thing - the town council has agreed, for the first time ever, to allow a rock concert IN the castle.
