Post-festival litter in Athlone
By Seán | July 19th, 2007 |Just lookit ‘em there - looking so geared-up, so athletic, so noble in their pursuit of personal challenge.
It was the morning after the triAthlone and the munchkin and I were heading home from mass at the friary when a cry rang out from a nearby balcony. A boisterous group of musicians had carried their [...]
TriAthlone Winners
By Seán | July 18th, 2007 |As we’ve been talking so much about the triAthlone, it just wouldn’t be right not to tell you who won.
This, the second year of Athlone’s triathalon, saw MUCH better weather than last year (the rain was falling sideways, as I recall). We had more than 1,500 athletes who dived into the river Shannon to swim [...]
Kerbside in the Castle
By Seán | July 16th, 2007 |This past Saturday I think I had one of the most exhilarating musical experiences of my life.
Just look at the schoolmaster and I and all the RAWK in the picture to your left there - awesome. Cheers to local photographer David Walsh for a great shot.

Aside from this weekend’s TriAthlone here in town and the Phoenix Festival in Tullamore, Ballinasloe is getting in on the action with their Arts & River festival this weekend. Oxygen just finished, The World Feadh has just been announced and the Midlands Music Festival is around the [...]
Tri-Athlone Preparations
By Seán | July 12th, 2007 |Well, there they are - the inflatable pontoons on the Shannon just under Athlone town bridge. Those pontoons mark the swimming lanes for this weekend’s triathlone race. Last year - the first year of the race - an unexpected stormy day happened on the event - lashing rain and wind. This year isn’t looking good [...]
Rockin’ Athlone castle
By Seán | June 30th, 2007 |I just got back from a meeting with Bobby Hewitt, the organiser of the Athlone tri-fest - a weekend-long festival that encompasses a triathalon, concerts and loads of other festival madness.
But here’s the cool thing - the town council has agreed, for the first time ever, to allow a rock concert IN the castle.
And guess [...]
