Sean’s Bar Sunday session

By Seán | September 17th, 2007 | 2 Comments »

It was a very ill-advised course of action Saturday night.
Let’s just leave it to say that it involved my participation in a stag night and then a gig somewhere in town that migrated from behind the microphones into the back smoking area until it was so late the publican threatened to leave us locked [...]

Sean’s Bar Sunday session

It was the session that wouldn’t end.
The Ambering Moonees played their normal set filled with lovely little trad numbers like this one and only the obligatory amount of messing about. Yours truly was, of course, very well-behaved throughout and never rose to inventing purile songs about the effects of hangovers.
As the session finished up a [...]

Last weekend of the world Fleadh

By Seán | August 12th, 2007 | 1 Comment »

Only in its second year, The World Fleadh finishes its week-long stint in Portlaoise (its inaugural year was in Kerry).
The purpose and design of this Irish festival is to showcase the best of Irish traditional and contemporary music in a custom-designed village setting. The organisers mean for it to be the Irish answer to festivals [...]

Sean’s Sunday Session

It was the first of two Sunday sessions without the Amber Moon units. I headed down to Sean’s Bar a bit early - I had been out playing the previous evening and the fire to get the fingers on the fretboard was in me.
As I mentioned earlier, the town has been fierce quiet and Sean’s [...]

Sean’s Sunday session

Due to a certain hospitable pub in Ballinahown I happened to be in on Saturday night (and a good few hours of Sunday morning, actually) I was not up early on Sunday. The mobile rang into my aching world at around half one with the bean on the other end of the line.
“Any chance you’re [...]

Sean’s Sunday Session

By Seán | July 18th, 2007 | 1 Comment »

After my Saturday night I awoke Sunday morning with a grin on my face and an itch in my fingers to grab the guitar again as soon as humanly possible. This could be why this entry has not one - not two - but THREE, count ‘em, THREE mp3s!! Booyah!

Irish Instrument of the week - the bones

By Seán | July 8th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

This week’s instrument is the bones.
Exactly like they sound - the bones are two bones (usually the rib or lower leg bones of a goat) held in the hand and played to percussive effect.
Today “bones” are more often carved from wood. They are most commonly held concave sides facing away from each other on either [...]

Sean’s Sunday Session

The oldest bar in the world and the, ah, maybe not the oldest session, but certainly a good old session if’n ya know what I’m talkin’ about . . .
That picture there is of the munchkin clapping and the goils laughin with her. But I get ahead of myself
I stuck the head in solo early [...]

Sean’s Sunday Session

The Sunday session abides.
I popped in early, an act resulting from my early start and Athlone Agri Show excursion. Big M and the painter were in residence, but I had arrived before Amber Moon and was about half-way through my drink before things got going.
It wasn’t one of the all-day sessions as sometimes occur [...]

Irish instrument of the week

By Seán | June 11th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

This week’s Irish instrument is the whistle.
Called the “Irish whistle,” “tin whistle,” “penny whistle,” or, as gaeilge, feadog, these whistles are present at most Irish traditional sessions, tripping lightly through melodies or crying through a haunting air.
These whistles are no longer made from tin, which contains a dangerous lead element. They are most commonly plastic. [...]
