Shack Session

By Seán | November 22nd, 2006 | Add a Comment »

I decided to stick up a sketch of last night instead of a photo this week, feel free to go to the bottom of this post to see a photo instead - or to compare the horrible attempt at likenesses. *grin*
So the bean and I headed out to the Shack last night a bit early [...]

Shine’s Sunday Session

By Seán | November 21st, 2006 | Add a Comment »

When wifey and I first moved here we were regulars at the Sunday evening traditional Irish session in Shine’s Bar. Since becoming gainfully employed on Monday mornings, we haven’t found our way out there for a good stretch of time.
I had it in my head to make the extra effort to make it out this [...]

Flannery’s Saturday session

By Seán | November 16th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

I was down in Flannery’s on the weekend for the Saturday session. Truth be told I almost didn’t get out of the house - there I was, lying in my warm cozy bed next to a cuddly wifey when the bean txt’d to ask was I going to the session - “nah,” I replied, snuggling [...]

Shack Session

Last night was the Shack Session and we had two honeymooning visitors from Wisconsin joining us. Seeing the two lovebirds reminded me of myself and Kim when we arrived in Ireland on our honeymoon.
In any case, ze germanz pulled up in the car park at the same time as the sherif and the three of [...]

Amber Moon

By Seán | November 14th, 2006 | 2 Comments »

Sean’s Bar this saturday saw a new band taking the afternoon traditional Irish slot, Amber Moon. It’s true, what with hardy, damsel, angel and the bean playing together I could hardly not make mention of their session. Truly dedicated to the craic, the foursome played several hours past their early afternoon timeslot, much to the [...]

Brideswell Session

By Seán | November 10th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Another fortnight come and gone and I found myself in Brideswell ordering Guinness at the counter of O’Connell’s Pub. Shifting anxiously in the air around my head were the sounds of uilleann pipes, guitars, flute and a bouzouki fidgeting themselves into musical readiness.

Flannery’s Session

By Seán | October 30th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

It’s been a while since my last post about Flannery’s and this last Saturday night I made it a point to stop in. The evening was well-attended as usual and music was varied. I was especially pleased to capture this rendition of the transit van song, as it is one of my favourites. One of [...]

Sean’s Saturday Session

By Seán | October 29th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

So I popped down to Sean’s Bar Saturday evening to catch the weekly session. The crowd of onlookers and musicians was enormous this week and the tunes included a number of a capella sing-alongs in addition to some modern pieces and then, of course, some excellent trad.

Brideswell Session

Well, it was out to Brideswell last night for some world-class trad. I always regret it when I can’t make the bi-monthly session, because if you miss one, it’s almost a month between the last and the next one you’ll attend. This session was a very well-attended one with the core guitar/bouzouki/uilleann pipe instrumentation plus [...]

Shack Session

What you see above you are two songwriters from different generations, representing the kind of great that the Shack sessions can be.
This week’s Shack session was everything these sessions should be. The turn-out was tremendous, the participation was enthusiastic and the instrumentation was varied. Myself and the 15-year-old vietnamese boy arrived to find ze germanz [...]
