Sean’s Saturday Session

By Seán | October 22nd, 2006 | Add a Comment »

So I popped around Sean’s bar on Saturday for the evening session. It was bursting with musicians this week, two fiddles, bodhran, guitars, whistles, flutes and a banjo.
For your listening pleasure, we have Ronan singing Peggy Gordon in a rendition that builds as the instruments layer in over him.

Shack Session

By Seán | October 18th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Well, this tuesday was the Shack session and there was a huge showing of folks this week: Bongo Benny, Fiona, Des, Pads, the Bean, Anne-Marie, Bill, ze Germanz and a songwriter Declan, new to the fold.
The instrumentation has changed somewhat as of late, what with the introduction of bongos and, this week, our lovely floutist. [...]

Roisin Dubh

By Seán | October 11th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

It was a wet one last night.
At the end of the slick roads we drove last night was Galway and The Roisin Dubh. It being our first time playing this prestigious venue we didn’t really know what to expect. Truth be told , the last time I’d stopped in at the Roisin Dubh was years [...]

Sean’s Sunday Session

By Seán | October 11th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Well, this Sunday the session in Sean’s was truly something unusual.
As this weekend was the Irish International Barbershop convention (and not a couple of weeks ago, as I had thought), we were surprised by a group of lads who stopped into Sean’s Bar and gave us a couple of tunes. After repeated requests to sing [...]

Bill Coleman and Kerbside at the Roisin Dubh tonight!!

By Seán | October 10th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

I woke this morning with a buzz in my brain.
Tonight we’re playing The Roisin Dubh (pronounced “ROE-sheen duhv”) in Galway with Bill Coleman. The Dubh is a pretty prestigious venue, hosting all kinds of internationally famous acts. Admittedly, we’ll be playing the upstairs stage, but it’s still super exciting.
It’s been a while since wifey [...]

Bill Coleman plays The Shack

By Seán | October 9th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

I seem to be turning into a sound engineer.
For the second time in recent months I found myself on the opposite end of performance, working the desk at Bill Coleman’s show in the Shack this past Saturday night. To be honest, it’s a nice for a change not to worry about having to perform; [...]

21st Birthday party

By Seán | September 30th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

In the states, a person’s 21st birthday is a big deal: that’s the year you can drink alchohol.
In Ireland it’s a big deal too. It’s the year you can . . .
um, . . . drink more alchohol?
I went to a good friend’s 21st birthday party last night at the local rugby club. You’ll [...]

Brideswell Session

By Seán | September 29th, 2006 | 2 Comments »

Last night was the fabulous Brideswell traditional Irish music session. This session is, quite possibly, the best traditional session in the midlands.
I almost didn’t go, but then I reflected that it had been some weeks since I last attended. It was a wet drive out under the overhanging trees to Brideswell. The village of [...]

Deadly Dempsey

By Seán | September 28th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Damien Dempsey is the kind of guy you see headlining at major festivals. He has a big, husky Dublin-drenched voice that functions with such power it makes you wonder if he actually needs a microphone. He’s reknown for his politically-driven material and his cross-genre songs that borrow heavily from the traditions of reggae, rock, Irish [...]

Damien Dempsey Tonight!

By Seán | September 27th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

So I play a bit of music myself. Like most musicians, I’ve amassed the necessary equipment with which to carry out a successful show. I received a call recently from a good friend in Ballymahon who is coordinating a show for Damien Dempsey and was asked if I could do sound on the night.
The thing [...]
