Kerbside in the Castle

By Seán | July 16th, 2007 | 2 Comments »

This past Saturday I think I had one of the most exhilarating musical experiences of my life.
Just look at the schoolmaster and I and all the RAWK in the picture to your left there - awesome. Cheers to local photographer David Walsh for a great shot.
To put it mildly, our gig in Athlone Castle [...]

Irish Slang - Sorry

By Seán | July 15th, 2007 | 1 Comment »

Of all the countries in the world that commonly speak English, the Irish are known particularly for their deft command of the language.
What you may not know is that the language arrived on some strange shores when it crossed the Irish sea. While visitors may understand most everything that’s said (aside from a few extremely [...]

The TriAthlone triathalon

By Seán | July 14th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

Just look at that. Those are the triathletes this afternoon beginning the first leg of the triAthlone triathalon, swimming against the current up the river Shannon. After that they bike, run and then feel really good about what they’ve done I guess.
Crazy athletic types.

Irish Festival Season

By Seán | July 12th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

Despite the lousy weather, it’s festival season in Ireland.
Aside from this weekend’s TriAthlone here in town and the Phoenix Festival in Tullamore, Ballinasloe is getting in on the action with their Arts & River festival this weekend. Oxygen just finished, The World Feadh has just been announced and the Midlands Music Festival is around the [...]

Tri-Athlone Preparations

Well, there they are - the inflatable pontoons on the Shannon just under Athlone town bridge. Those pontoons mark the swimming lanes for this weekend’s triathlone race. Last year - the first year of the race - an unexpected stormy day happened on the event - lashing rain and wind. This year isn’t looking good [...]

Yes, the Athlone Castle gig and the triathlone are this weekend and the midlands are a-buzz with anticipation.
In this vein, myself (as half of Kerbside)and the other local original bands playing Saturday night in the castle were invited by Midlands Radio 3 DJ June Carley to drop in during her Sunday Best of Irish broadcast [...]

Flowers are here - the end is nigh!

By Seán | July 7th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

Ah, last year when I started the blog the extremely long summer of 2006 was finally fading into gray September skies. I had noticed that the flower baskets seemed to have gone up late last year and stayed into autumn.
This year summer seems determined to bide its time. Either that or it made an appearance [...]

Happy Fourth of July!

By Seán | July 4th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

Yes, today is the 231st birthday of the United States of America.
They say that today there are more Irish people in the US than in Ireland itself. Be that as it may, the US would certainly be a different place without its Irish. The most wonderful thing is that after all the years of the [...]

Ah, the lovely rain-soaked Irish June

By Seán | July 3rd, 2007 | 1 Comment »

Just look at that.
I had mentioned that this June is less than the tourist might expect in the way of sunshine and summer weather, but this Sunday when the skies opened up and a veritable monsoon poured forth onto the earth I really began to wonder about global climate change.
Back in April while wearing shorts, [...]
