John Joe Kelly - Bodhran player from Flook

By Seán | July 5th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

Now, while that video is mainly all about the Uilleann pipes, the Bodhran player there - John Joe Kelly from Flook - is the one I WANTED to post on, but the “embed video” feature was disabled. You’ll have to click here to watch his awesome viruosity. I think it’s also his sense of humour [...]

The Shack Session

By Seán | July 5th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

It had been a while since the bean and myself walked out to the Shack and, seeing as there was a break in the rain, we decided the evening was perfect for a stroll.
Ze germanz relieved us of carrying the instruments out (though we’d return with them across our backs later) and we had a [...]

Irish Instrument of the week - Irish Flute

By Seán | June 30th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

This week’s instrument is the Irish flute.
The picture to the left there was taken at the Sean’s Bar sunday session while a very patient damsel awaited my photographic portrait of her instruments before plucking one of the three from the table and proceeding with the next song. Shown in the photo are (left to right) [...]

Rockin’ Athlone castle

By Seán | June 30th, 2007 | 3 Comments »

I just got back from a meeting with Bobby Hewitt, the organiser of the Athlone tri-fest - a weekend-long festival that encompasses a triathalon, concerts and loads of other festival madness.
But here’s the cool thing - the town council has agreed, for the first time ever, to allow a rock concert IN the castle.
And guess [...]

Shack Session

By Seán | June 27th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

The rain has let up a bit in the last couple of days, so it was with instruments over the aul shoulder that myself and Guy Noir went strolling across town for this week’s Shack Pub session.
While he has aspirations of learning the harmonica, Guy is not a musician and was, I think, intrigued by [...]

Sean’s Sunday Session

By Seán | June 27th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

The Sunday session abides.
I popped in early, an act resulting from my early start and Athlone Agri Show excursion. Big M and the painter were in residence, but I had arrived before Amber Moon and was about half-way through my drink before things got going.
It wasn’t one of the all-day sessions as sometimes occur [...]

Shack Session

By Seán | June 20th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

It was an unusual Shack session this week.
It all started some time after nine when ze germanz rang to see was anyone coming out to the Shack. A few minutes later it was he and I settling in on our lonesome, discussing the rainy weather with the proprietor and speculating about the chances of more [...]

Shack Session

By Seán | June 14th, 2007 | 3 Comments »

It was a late start Tuesday night. I rang up ze germanz and managed to get a lift out shackwase.
Upon arrival we found just the sherrif and des holding court with their guitars conspicuously absent from their laps. Given the large turnout at last week’s session, we were surprised to find just the two lads. [...]

Sean’s Sunday Session

By Seán | June 12th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

Another Sunday, another session in Sean’s Bar.
Having finally achieved temporal equilibrium, due mostly to an early retirement at 8pm the night before, Sunday morning found me bright-eyed and bushy tailed. I strolled down to the session in two doses - once while munchkin was having her afternoon nap and then again with her in tow [...]

Hickory Wind debuts in Sean’s Bar

By Seán | June 12th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

Hold onto your hats kids, there’s a new band in town and they smell of . . . what is that, musty old Alabama cherrywood trunks filled with moth-eaten gowns and half-painted, hand-carved wooden toys left by a generation now whiskered and nostalgically inclined?
What? Asparagus?? But that doesn’t make any sense!
All right, embrace your inner [...]
