Finally some sun in Athlone!

By Seán | July 31st, 2007 | Add a Comment »

It’s about bloody time! Just look at that lovely, sunny blue sky there!
The funny thing is not the sunny blue sky, but what lies beneath it: the water level on Shannon Weir. You may recall last December when the water level rose over the weir (it later flooded the town, actually) and it’s currently [...]

Rain, Rain go away . . .

By Seán | July 27th, 2007 | Add a Comment »

In Ireland there is always an awful lot of talk about the weather. It’s the natural perogative. After all, there is an Irish saying,
“If you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes.”
Aside from being generally wetter than other places, the Irish climate’s consistency consists of its inconsistency. However, as you may have [...]

Ah, the lovely rain-soaked Irish June

By Seán | July 3rd, 2007 | 1 Comment »

Just look at that.
I had mentioned that this June is less than the tourist might expect in the way of sunshine and summer weather, but this Sunday when the skies opened up and a veritable monsoon poured forth onto the earth I really began to wonder about global climate change.
Back in April while wearing shorts, [...]

By Seán | January 14th, 2007 | 2 Comments »

I have been discussing the flooding of the Shannon in previous posts. First I took a photo showing the disappearance of the weir under the rising river, then The Shannon actually burst its banks and proceeded to flood the town.
Returning to Athlone this week I noticed the waters had abated hardly at all. [...]

Fog and Flood

By Seán | December 19th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Once or twice a year, usually around the winter months, a fog hits Ireland and stays for 48 hours or more. I awoke this morning to find the fog from the evening before had only thickened, blanketing Athlone in a magical, silvery haze. Adding to the change of scenery, the Shannon has continued to swell, [...]

The Shannon bursts its banks

By Seán | December 13th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

The Shannon floods its banks just south of the  Athlone town bridge. Boats docked riverside      threaten to drift onto the pavement.  Leprechaun community evacuates   for higher ground.

It has been threatening to happen for a while.
One storm after another, the disappearance of the weir and now the news has Athlone on flood watch, promising sand [...]

Where the weir went?

By Seán | December 7th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Above is the flooded weir today, below is a pic I took two months ago, so you can see where the weir went.
It takes a vast amount of water for the Shannon to have risen this high at the weir wall. All of the floodplains south of the weir would need to be overrun (they [...]
