First black Irish mayor wanted back in Nigeria

Rotimi Adebari, mayor of PortlaoiseYou may recall my post a while back about Ireland’s first black mayor.

Portlaoise elected Rotimi Adebari as mayor, making him the first black man in Ireland to hold such a position. Rotimi came to Ireland almost a decade ago to escape religious persecution in his Nigerian homeland. Here’s the hilarious thing - the nation that drove him away now wants him back.

In an article in the Irish Independent, officials in Nigeria were quoted as planning an attempt to “poach” him from Portlaoise.

Now why would anyone …

The Guardian praises Irelandlogue

The guardian newspaper praises sean lightholder and irelandlogueBenji Lanyado, a writer for the Guardian.co.uk, has dedicated an entire article to a very positive review of Irelandlogue. Read it here.

Whoo-hoo!

Mika of the boots boys suggested I contact Benji a couple of weeks ago about getting on his weekly top 10 list of travel blogs. I was cautioned that Benji

“is not a typical reviewer though - hard to please and not afraid to say what he thinks. So he doesn’t rave about every blog he likes, he critics them maybe a bit more harshly than usual, but not without reason.”

An Viking apology 1,000 years in the making

viking boat sails into dublin harbour

So a great big viking ship sailed into Dublin harbour yesterday.

6 weeks at sea and a bunch of salty Danes rowed up to Irish shores for the first time in centuries. Their ship was a replica of one built in Glendalough, Wicklow (Ireland) in 1042 AD. Rather than leap from the ship and begin a bloody campaign of rape and pillage, they instead formally apologised for the Viking invasions of Ireland.

Mundy plays charity concert in Athlone

mundy, irish artist from Birr, county offalyA good friend of mine gave me a shout yesterday to ask if I would mention a charity concert she’s arranging for Sarah Ryan, a handicapped girl from Birr she works with.

It all started with a phone call to Mundy, whom those of you not familiar with the Irish music scene will remember from the profile I did on him some months ago, to see if he might be willing to help out. It turns out - how’s this for coincidence - that Mundy actually knows the little girl’s mom quite well (he is, after all, FROM Birr) and agreed immediately to play!

How awesome is that?

So, here’s the skinny:
