Face in a pint Friday

Ah, pint head art. It’s a fleeting, beautiful thing. I’ve decided this field of artistic work has been too long neglected and am publishing a series of pint head art here on irelandlogue.

Got a good pint face? Send it in to me and - if it’s good enough (or not!) - I’ll publish it here.

deLoreanFire up your flux capacitors, folks. The DeLorean Motor Company has announced that the Irish car made famous in the Back to the Future movies will be going back into production this year with new DeLoreans rolling off the line in late 2008.

The new cars will maintain the same design as the original, but with an updated engine, and loads of modern amenities like an iPod dock built into the dash.

And if you should want your DeLorean to travel in time?

Irish Joke of the day - Signs you’ve been in your Irish town too long

I thought this deserved re-posting but, unfortunately, I have no idea who wrote it originally. Reading it though, I’ll have to make one up for Athlone. Maybe next week . . .

SIGNS YOU’VE BEEN IN CORK TOO LONG

1. You say “I’m Grand, like” all the time.

2. You think Murphy’s is ’savage’.

3. You think of Murphy’s as if it is the sixth food group.

4. You say “Are you Grand?” all the time.

5. You say “Tis grand, like?” all the time.

6. You say “That’d be grand, like” all the time.

United Ireland by 2027? What are the odds?

united ireland irish road sign with 32 county as the distanceTen to one by the year 2027, according to Paddy Power.

Yes, one of the many cultural twists that still befuddles me is the legality and casual practice of gambling in Ireland. There are gambling shops everywhere in this country and, apparently, one can simply walk into one of these places and bet on . . . well, anything.

Case in point is latest bet on offer: a United Ireland. Think about it - people have fought, died and argued for the cause . . . why not try betting?

The Top 15 Signs you’ve been in Athlone too long

15. You’re annoyed when travel guides describe Athlone as being “west of Dublin.”
14. You know what “bog hole jumping” is.
13. The dual carriageway bypass is still called “the new road.”
12. You chuckle internally when visitors pronounce it “ATH-loan.”
11. You and yours pronounce it, “the tay-HEWN.”
10. You know anyone who has actually had a drink in Moran’s pub (on Church street next to Ulster Bank).
9. You own a copy of “Love?” by Donna and Joe McCaul.

Seán auditions for the Irish Sesame Street

kermit and the count from sesame streetI had posted a while back that I would love to audition for the Irish Sesame Street, but my lack of Irish prevented me from doing so.

Well, some good friends of mine have been on to me since and, with their encouragement and expertise as gaeilge, I have submitted my application to be one of the Sesame Street characters.
