The winter vomiting bug

Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe
It comes around every winter in Ireland - the winter vomiting bug.

Highly contagious, if a hospital admits patients with the bug they will be quarantined from the other wards. Last year wifey had the misfortune to catch the winter vomiting bug when she was more than 11 months pregnant. The downside was there was very little that could be done for her and if you think throwing up constantly is bad, try is with a squirming, kicking baby in your abdomen. The good side was she got her own spacious ward and was able to make her repeated trips to the throne room in complete privacy.

So last night I gained a new level of sympathy for her trials when the little sister and I found ourselves strongly in the grip of the virus at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe. We were plugged into IVs and left in our own ward from around 4 until 9am this morning. Now we’re home and feeling like linen cutouts of ourselves.

So, if you’re visiting Ireland in the winter, here are some things you should know about the winter vomiting bug:

  • Commonly called the Winter Vomiting Bug, it’s actually named the Norovirus
  • The virus is around all year, but tends to flare up in winter with increased cases across Ireland
  • It is not usually life-threatening except in the very young or very old
  • It is highly contagious - make sure to wash your hands constantly if you’re afflicted
  • There is nothing they can do to stop the diarrhea/vomiting - it just has to run its course
  • It affects different people to different degrees, but chances are you’ll be miserable for up to 72 hours if you get it
  • Hospitals are reluctant to admit winter vomiting bug patients, due to the virus’s highly infectious nature
  • If you are very sick with the virus, the hospital will rehydrate you via IV
  • If you’re an international visitor and are admitted to a hospital, the cost is €233/day

It turns out this year is no different, here is a news story on the virus outbreak.

Well I would just like to congratulate wifey on the unatural phenomenon of breaking the Guinness world record for being 12 and a half months at full term. (As she had the bug this time last year at over 11 months preggers & munchkin didnt pop out till Jan 31st). I though my sis Niamh was a phenomena in her own right by carrying ‘pumkin’ sam until 10 months & 2 days!!!
Fair play 2 ya Kim, much respect,GO ON THE TOWN!!!
