Tallest Cranes Revisited

Cranes over Athlone

Well, the Athlone town centre project procedes apace. The last time I mentioned these cranes you couldn’t really see the results of their efforts easily, but look above there and you’ll see emerging at the base of four of the cranes the top of what is probably an elevator/stairwell tower. The Athlone town centre will be Ireland’s largest shopping/leisure centre outside of Dublin.

I learned that the cranes’ gears are left open at night when work is done so that they can blow with the wind. This explains why sometimes you’ll see them all lined up like giant birds alerted of danger. As you can see in the above picture, they work late into the night.

I’m sure there’s a huge bonus awaiting the contractor who can finish this project ahead of schedule.

The tall section of building at the base of the cranes is the 12 storey hotel at the centre of the development. Two of the tallest cranes now have Christmas lights strung out along the boom … very festive!!
